Trying Out the Callaway Solaire Golf Clubs

A few golf club manufacturers have recently started to show more attention to women golfers by offering more high end ladies golf clubs. One of these companies is Callaway and I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity this summer to try out the new Callaway Solaire golf clubs. These clubs made their official debut at this year's PGA Show in Orlando.

The Solaire ladies golf set is available as a 9-piece set (MSRP $599.95) and 14-piece set (MSRP $899.95). Each set includes an all-titanium driver, stainless steel fairway woods, hybrids, irons, wedges, a mallet putter and a versatile cart bag.

The Looks: the golf bag looks really sharp. Several ladies at the driving range and golf course made comments about how pretty the bag was. The pockets are pretty good and I always like the insulated cooler pocket. Overall, it looks great!

The Clubs: Coming from a golfer who has yet to break 100 (although I've gotten close!), I'm not sure how helpful or accurate my experience will be, so please keep that in mind. That being said, I enjoyed using these clubs.

The iron and wedges are great. Easy to swing and I consistently hit well with them. One thing that caught my attention is that there is no 9 iron (I had the 9 pc set). I only really noticed because my 9 iron is one of my favorite clubs and I use it all the time. It did seem that I was hitting the pitching wedge farther than normal, so the 9 iron probably wouldn't be missed too much.

The driver was equally well designed. It felt really nice in my hands and was weighted nicely. I was driving the ball 170-200 yards (with roll), which is pretty good for me.

Fairway woods have always been a challenge for me and they usually don't leave my bag. I did try the 5w that came with the set, but it was not one of my more successful clubs.

The two hybrids that came with the set are great (6h and 7h). I just started playing with hybrids last season and really enjoy using them.

All in all, this is a very nice club set specifically designed for women. It is nice to see a golf company show more attention to the women. The 9 piece set is a great starter set and the 14 piece adds a few more clubs for the more experienced golfer. Check them out if you ever get the chance.

The fabric is really soft and there is a nice bit of stretch to the fabric, so the shirt really moves with you through your swing. Tips For Finding The Right Golf Tournament Prizes

We're at the time of year where most women's golf groups are planning for their fall ladies golf tournaments. If you're looking for tournament prizes or tournament gifts for your ladies, here are some tips to help the process go smoothly.

1. Set a budget. We talk to many groups who fall in love with a specific ladies golf accessory for a prize idea, but then cannot get the budget to make the purchase and are then disappointed with what is left in their price range. Know your budget, then start your shopping. What is a reasonable budget? Most of the groups we work with have a budget of $8-$40/participant.

2. Pick items everyone will like. The main goal should be to find golf items that are unique, but still something that everyone would actually use or find interesting. Our most popular women's golf accessories for tournaments are accessory bags, golf ball holders, crystal ball markers, ball marker necklaces, and golf towels.

3. Have a backup plan. While we try very hard to prevent this, sometimes there just isn't enough inventory available for the larger tournament orders. When you meet with your women's golf event committee or group, be sure to have the ladies pick 1 or 2 acceptable backup options in the event your first choice isn't available. This will save you a lot of time later if you find out the approved choice isn't available and you have to call a 2nd meeting to pick a new option.

4. Allow plenty of time for the prizes to arrive. For large orders it can take an extra 1-3 weeks, depending on the time of year and the inventory availability for specific items.

5. Plan for any extras you might need. Often, a golf group will purchase their tournament order and then call back in a panic just days before their event because they underestimated the number of gifts they needed. While we are always happy to help you out with your event, there are things to consider for last minute orders such as expedited shipping fees, items no longer being available or on backorder, etc. If you are afraid of ordering too many items, check the store's return policy. We will accept tournament item returns within 30 days of your order, so you can always return any extra tournament gifts to Pink Golf Tees.

6. Discounts. Many women's golf stores will offer tournament discounts. You will have to ask, as it is not something you can find on the websites. The actual discount will be closely tied to the quantity of products you order and the actual item itself.

I Survived My First Half Marathon

On Saturday I ran my first half marathon. It was part of the Zooma women's race series and was a very well organized event. But, I can't say running it was the most enjoyable experience. The course was said to be "very challenging" and they sure weren't kidding or exaggerating. If anything, they were conservative in their description! Race day was also one of the hottest days we've had so far this summer. The main thing is that I finished the race!

My friend, Michelle, ran the race with me and we both wore our Born Fit outfits - blue BornFit running skort and matching Rudy tank top. These running skirts are SO comfortable, even for 13+ miles and lots of heat. The undershorts don't ride up or bunch and the wrap style of the Wilder skort is very breathable.

While I'm still sore from the race on Saturday, I'm already looking ahead to my next race! Hopefully a less challenging one this time, though.

10 Days Until the Half Marathon

In the past 7 weeks I've run over 150 miles, tried out 3 pairs of running shoes, and played a skimpy 2 rounds of golf. My first half marathon is only 10 days away and I'm ready for it! Here's what I've learned:

1. You don't have to be a "runner" to do a half marathon. I had never run more than 2-3 miles before training for this race. 10 miles really doesn't feel much different for me than 4 miles, once you figure out the right pace.

2. The right running gear is key. OK, so I've done a lot of shopping in the past 2 months in preparation for training and the race itself. Some of my essential purchases include a Garmin GPS watch, Anthripod hydration belt, and 3 pairs of running shoes. I would recommend anyone who is serious about running to invest in a good pair (or two) of shoes. My first 2 pairs were shoes I purchased at a big box shoe store. I'm sure they are good shoes, but they have started to make my hips, knees and ankles hurt. I finally went to have my gait analyzed this week and I now have a new shoe that is the proper fit and support. What a huge difference!

3. Running skirts are awesome! One of my biggest finds when looking for running gear was the running skirt. I cannot say enough good things about them, well, most of them. Not all running skirts are created equal. I have one skirt from a specialty women's fitness store that looks cute, but the undershorts ride up and the skirt rides down the entire time I'm running, which is really unacceptable. I am a huge fan of the Born Fit skorts, especially the Wilder Skort. These skirts are really comfortable, stay in place, and don't bunch when running like many shorts often do. And, they're really flattering. The main thing about a good running skirt is to make sure it will stay in place and the BornFit skirts perform beautifully.

4. You may not lose any weight. Weight loss was not a motivator for me to start running, but I assumed that it would be a happy byproduct of training. Wrong! While I'm burning more calories than ever, my appetite has gone through the roof and I'm constantly hungry.

5. Running in the rain is actually quite enjoyable. The first time I ran 10 miles was on a rainy Saturday morning. It was June, the temperature only in the mid 40's, and pouring down rain. I was determined to stick to my training schedule, so I finally forced myself to leave the house. After the initial shock, the rain actually felt really nice and that was the easiest 10 mile run for me yet.

6. Having a goal. The only reason I really started running was because I had my eye on this specific half marathon. As soon as I signed up for it, I knew that there was no going back and that I had to stick to my training schedule with no exceptions. I would have never thought to run 5 or 6 miles on my own, much less 10 or 12 miles, without a set training schedule and race to train for. I already have 2 more half marathons that I'm considering once I finish this one (let's see if I survive, first!) to keep me running.

7. Training for a half marathon won't help your golf game. Running this much takes a lot of time and unfortunately it has taken most of the time I'd otherwise be golfing. Let's see if I can find a better balance of running and golf after this race!
