Golf Lesson #5

This week was my final golf lesson of the season with Kathleen. We worked with my hybrid clubs, which I've never been able to hit for the life of me. Not to make excuses, but she discovered that they are way to short for me. Hurray! There is hope for me, afterall! I need to look into getting them lengthened or replaced ASAP. We also did some putting work with my new pink putter. This was my first time using this putter and I really like it already! It feels very stable in my hands and is easy to swing. Very smooth. And, I hit great with it!

If you are in the Denver area and are interested in taking golf lessons, be sure to contact Kathleen Heiney at the Linc Golf & Wellness Center. They offer a variety of lesson options, corporate events, women-specific workshops and seminars. Plus, she's easy to work with and makes the lessons fun!

Golf Lesson #4

I had my 4th golf lesson (only 1 left!) yesterday afternoon and it was great! Things are finally starting to feel "natural" with my new and improved swing. We did some work on chipping and pitching, which was badly needed. I can tell that I haven't been playing much this year because my short game has really suffered! Within 5 minutes, Kathleen had me back chipping like a pro. If only I had her to follow me around when I'm actually playing golf!

I also got to show off my new Sweet Spot Think Pink Putter, which generated a lot of attention. Next lesson will actually be on putting, so I'll get to try the new putter out then and see how it does. On looks alone, it is getting a 9 or 10 from everyone so far.

New Think Pink Ladies Golf Clubs!

A couple weeks ago I was fortunate enough to be contacted by the folks at Sweet Spot Golf regarding their new Think Pink ladies golf club line. These are some pretty groovy clubs that took them over 2 years to engineer. The club head design was patterned after the racing bicycle helmets to make them more aerodynamic and maximize the hitting potential. The unique v-pattern is not only for looks - it is a patented design to help with your ball alignment. So far, these clubs are getting rave reviews from lady golfers far and wide. As soon as my set gets here, I'll be sure to try them out and give you an update. The Think Pink line offers a pink putter (available with black or white), a pink driver, and 3 pink hybrid clubs (#3, #4, #5).

To top things off, a generous portion of all sales goes to support the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Cute clubs, outstanding performance, and a good cause. Need I say more? They are now available at the Pink Golf Tees store, so be among the first to check them out and be the envy of your friends on the golf course!

Golf Lesson #3

OK, so I finally got around to having my third golf lesson of the season last week. The first thing out of my golf pro's mouth was "have you practiced since I saw you last?" Granted, it had been almost a month since I had seen her last, but that's a question I've grown to dread. In years past, it was very typical for me to play golf at least once a week. This year has been the anomaly, with the TN golfing experience a couple weeks ago being only the 3rd time we've played all summer. Gasp, I know! So, on that note we begin the lesson. My drive has gotten much better in these lessons, which was one of the main things I wanted to focus on this year. Old habits do die hard, though, so we're still focusing on my swing. Next lesson I hope to work with my new pink putter and new pink hybrid clubs.

Golfing in TN

I was in TN last week for my sister's wedding. We ended up with some time to kill one morning, so a couple of us decided to go play golf. Since we had limited time, we took the first tee time available at Brainerd Golf Course. Also, since we had flown to TN without any plans to play golf, we had to rent golf clubs at the pro shop. This was definately not the course's strong point. There were no ladies golf clubs and between the two golf bags we ended up with 1 driver, 1 ok putter and 1 awful putter, 1 8 iron, 1 3 hybrid (left hand), and a smattering of other golf clubs. That made things a little interesting!

Despite the issues with the golf clubs, it was a very enjoyable municipal golf course. There were several groups of ladies out playing and the course offered a nice variety in terrain. The one down side is that the golf course backs up to the Chattanooga Airport, so you get all the runway noise which is just about constant while you are playing.

Top 50 Ladies Golf Instructors

What makes a good golf instructor? Obviously, she needs to be well-educated, experienced and insightful. The key to being a great teacher, however, is chemistry. You may think such chemistry happens only by chance or after a couple of glasses of chardonnay. But a great teacher develops a rapport with any student who come to her lesson tee. This list collected by Golf For Women Magazine will help you find a teacher in your area — or guide you to one of the golf schools where they give lessons.

Do you have a favorite ladies golf instructor who didn't make the list? Please submit her name, contact information, and what you love about her!

What To Do With Your Old Golf Clubs?

We've all had this problem from one time or another. You buy a new set of ladies golf clubs, but what can you do with the old set of golf clubs? Sure, you can sell them on ebay or Craigslist, but it can be a hassle. I just recently stumbled across the perfect solution. The Susan G. Komen Foundation has a ladies golf club donation program. Here are the details:

Step 1. Gather as Many Clubs to Donate as You Possibly Can.
Clean out your closet, trunk, garage, etc. to find all the good quality golf clubs you might donate (ask your neighbors to do the same!). Ask your golfing partners to donate some clubs as well!Work with your local PGA Professional to add a Rally for the Cure Golf Club Club Donation component to an upcoming tournament, or in the golf shop. Work with your employer or local businesses and corporations to run a golf club donation drive to benefit Rally for the Cure. Get creative! How can you raise substantial contributions by collecting good quality golf clubs to donate?

Step 2. How to Ship Your Club Donations

You will be able to print out UPS shipping labels through this website. Safely pack and box-up your golf clubs, affix the shipping label to the box, and drop them off at your local The UPS Store® or give them to a UPS driver. The cost of shipping is as follows: $15 (1-20 clubs), $20 (21-40 clubs), $30 (40+ clubs). The cost of shipping will simply be deducted from the total donation value-there is NO out of pocket expense for shipping charges.

Need Boxes & Packing Supplies? Check with your local PGA Professional to see if they have any extra golf club boxes available. As the golf equipment experts, they may also be able to help you pack them up safely for shipping. If you collect 20 or more clubs to donate, you will receive FREE boxing & packing supplies at The UPS Store® if needed (donate less than 20 clubs and you will receive a 30% discount at The UPS Store® on any boxing required).

All donations support a good cause and are tax deductible.

Sleeveless on the Course? Yes, Please!

OK, call me strange, but I only like to wear sleeveless things in the summer. Whether at the office, working around the house, playing golf or going to the movies, chances are that you won't see me wearing anything with sleeves if it is over 80 degrees. Fortunately, there is a great variety in ladies sleeveless golf shirts and golf dresses to keep even the most picky golfer cool this summer while meeting the dress codes are the most strict golf clubs. My personal favorite is the Ladies Sleeveless Crossover Golf Shirt from Jofit Golfwear. I own this ladies golf top in two colors and wear them all the time. It fits perfectly and is very flattering. Want something more basic? Try the ladies sleeveless polos from Golftini, Loft 8, or Pahr Golf.

Golf Lesson #2

So, it's been a few weeks, but I finally did get my second golf lesson in with Kathleen. I have been so busy with Pink Golf Tees, home remodeling projects that seem to never end, and a new puppy that I really haven't gotten to play golf all that much compared to normal and feel bad going to a lesson when I haven't been practicing.

We worked on my swing some more. My new stance and swing feels very unnatural, but I'm hitting the ball further with less effort, so I can't complain! Now if I could only get out and play! Hopefully lesson #3 will be soon. Stay tuned!

Golf Skorts Are HOT This Season!

In years past, I've had a difficult time deciding what to wear to the golf course. I didn't like most of my shorts because they didn't have adequate pocket space for tees or the stray golf ball. They also always felt either too short or too long to be comfortable while playing golf. Most summer days are far too hot for capris, so that didn't leave me with too many options. And then I discovered the skort. The all magical ladies golf skort. Suddenly I found myself buying just about every golf and non-golf related skort I could find.

Benefits of a golf skort:

1. Pockets! So far all of my skorts have far superior pockets or better arranged pockets than my traditional ladies golf shorts.

2. Comfortable! I have found skorts to be much more comfortable than my ladies golf shorts any day on the golf course. I feel more covered in a skort than in shorts, even short ones, but can still get the same sun as wearing shorts.

3. Kick up the style factor! Skorts are a great way to make a statement on the golf course for ladies. I've found more unique, stylish and creative ladies golf skorts than I know what to do with. Say good bye to those boring ladies khaki golf shorts!

4. Variety! There is such a wide variety of ladies golf skorts available, that you are sure to find something to fit your personal style and body type. From athlethic, form fitting fabrics to linen, to seersucker, the options are almost endless.

So, if you haven't tried a golf skort yet, I highly recommend it for your next trip to the golf course. Or to the grocery store, or library... They are so comfortable and flattering that I could honestly wear mine just about every day, whether playing golf or not.

Golf Lesson #1 of the Season

OK, so I finally made time to schedule my first golf lesson of the season. I usually take a series of 4-5 lessons each summer to head off any new bad habits and to work on my technique. My boyfriend got me a package of lessons last fall for my birthday and I'm just now getting around to using them. They are with a different pro this year and so far I am very happy with his choice. They are with the Linc Golf & Wellness Center here at the Overland Golf Course in Denver. My LPGA instructor is Kathleen Heiney and she is great. All of my previous lessons have been with male instructors, so this is a completely different experience. While they showed me what I should be doing, Kathleen showed me HOW to do what I should be doing. For the first lesson, she mainly worked with adjusting my grip, posture, and some tweaks to my swing. It is amazing how just a few small changes can make such great improvements! The main thing she stressed was to RELAX. That is something I've always struggled with - relaxing on the golf course. I always feel rushed or stressed because people are watching me or waiting for me. Those few times where the golf course isn't crowded and I'm playing only with people I know, I play so much better than usual. Duh!

Stay tuned for lesson 2!

My New Favorite Golf Sunglasses!

I just received a pair of the brand new LiveEyewear Quatro Acadia sunglasses the other day and they are already my absolute favorite pair of sunglasses! I already have several pairs of sport glasses, but these are by far now the most fashionable of the bunch. They are also very lightweight and flatter my face shape (I normally have a hard time finding glasses that look good!). The first thing I noticed when I put them on was how incredible the lenses are (I have the copper lenses). They are great in both bright and low light conditions. With my old glasses (with copper lenses), I normally have to take them off in the parking garage to be able to see what I'm doing. These, however, are tinted just right so that I can still see very clearly, even in the very low light of the parking garage. I am very impressed! Did I mention that I also love the extra styling they gave these glasses? All around, I am very impressed. Finally, a pair of sport sunglasses that are stylish and budget friendly (only $49.95!). I've paid 3 times as much for sport sunglasses that I didn't like as much as these. The LiveEyewear Quatro Acadia is available in black or tortoise with copper or gray lenses.

Goodbye Annika!

It's the end of an era. Annika Sorenstam announced yesterday that she will retire at the end of this season, ending an LPGA Tour career in which she has won 72 tournaments to date and delivered a defining moment in sports history when she teed it up against the men on the PGA Tour. Though she hinted for the past several seasons about retirement, the news had a big effect on the sport all across the country - as well in Utah, where many golfers have been influenced by Sorenstam. The 37-year-old Sorenstam held a press conference Tuesday at Clifton, N.J., where she's competing in the Sybase Classic, and said she wanted to devote more time to her growing business and to start a family. She is engaged to Mike McGee, son of former PGA Tour player Jerry McGee.

Sorenstam dominated women's golf like few others, especially during a five-year period when she won 43 times and finished among the top three nearly 70 percent of the time. But for all her achievements - the only woman to shoot 59, 10 majors and one of six women to complete the career Grand Slam, in addition to being in the World Golf Hall of Fame - she became most famous for testing herself against the men. At the Colonial tournament in 2003, she was the first woman in 58 years to compete on the PGA Tour, though she missed the cut. Tiger Woods called Sorenstam "the greatest female golfer of all time." LPGA player and close friend Natalie Gulbis said life on the tour will be "a little different" without Sorenstam. Sorenstam's final event will be the Dubai Ladies Masters after the LPGA Tour season ends. Before then she's scheduled to make an appearance at the Champions Challenge next month in Lehi, representing her charity, the ANNIKA golf academy. The Associated Press contributed to this story.
